Poppy Day would not go smoothly without volunteers and one has done more than most.

Mornington woman Norma Burton (84) has sold poppies at the same place on the corner of George and Frederick Sts for the past 40 years.

She had also organised a group of volunteers from Knox Church for the past 40 years.

"It [RSA] is such a great organisation and they have done so much and I'm just grateful to be able to help them,'' she said.

"I'll carry on as long as I can,'' Mrs Burton said.

She had enjoyed meeting people and running into old friends on Poppy Day.

"I can't remember really any bad days."

Mrs Burton had two uncles who fought in and survived World War 1 and that had been part of her drive to support the appeal.

Her husband, Cliff, died in 2014 aged 84.

Mrs Burton had not noticed a significant increase or drop-off of willing donors on Poppy Day and said all age groups supported the cause.

Dunedin RSA president Lox Kellas called Mrs Burton's service "a great effort''.

"The service is admirable. It's a commendable effort.''

Sales had been "fairly heavy'' from the 35 stands around the city yesterday, Mr Kellas said.

He was pleased with how the day had gone.

Two hundred and eighty collectors armed with 65,000 poppies were on Dunedin streets.
