Hundreds of passengers left in a fog

Persistent low fog enveloped Dunedin International Airport yesterday morning, disrupting the flight plans of hundreds of people.

Two early flights departed but then the fog rolled in about 7.30am and remained until about 11.30am, causing delays for more than 500 passengers, Air New Zealand airport manager Alistair Bevin said.

"It's been very disruptive to our schedule."

One flight returned to Christchurch and four flights were diverted to Invercargill and the passengers bused to Dunedin.

Four flights out of Dunedin had to be cancelled.

Another flight was diverted to Invercargill, where its crew waited for the weather to clear before flying to Dunedin, he said.

By the afternoon, flights were back on schedule.

Fog affected the airport most mornings last week but had not stayed around as it did yesterday, Mr Bevin said.
