Hundreds of people have turned up to say farewell to Dunedin's historic Captain Cook Tavern this afternoon.
The final farewells come as the student watering hole is set to shut its doors for possibly the last time tonight, with the building's owners yet to find someone to take on the lease.
Students and other people with fond memories of the bar began turning up when it opened at midday.
Dunedin police alcohol harm reduction officer Sergeant Ian Paulin was happy with the way people were behaving early in the afternoon, but said police and the bar's operators were prepared in case things got out of hand.
Cook Brothers Bars director Richard McLeod said to keep things under control they had put up barriers to separate people waiting in line from the footpath and hired a private security company.
If things got out of hand they would not hesitate to close the bar early.
