A fire caused significant damage to a house in Opoho, Dunedin, yesterday.
Four fire crews were called to the basement fire in a Blacks Rd house at 4.07pm,Willowbank Station Senior Station Officer Craig Geddes said.
The fire spread to the wall and ceiling cavity, causing ''significant'' smoke and fire damage, he said.
The ''structural integrity'' of the floor was ''compromised'' by the fire, he said.
Fire crews from Willowbank, Dunedin, Lookout Point and St Kilda Stations were at the house for more than an hour, he said,''The whole house was full of smoke, so it took some time to clear that, and the wall cavity was involved, so it took some time to remove the wall linings.''
A neighbour raised the alarm after hearing a smoke alarm in the house.
The fire was being investigated but was not considered suspicious, he said.
Nobody was home when the fire started, but a man who lived at the house with a woman had returned before fire crews arrived. The man was treated for minor smoke inhalation.
