Hospital smoking room plan

The number of smokers lighting up near Dunedin Hospital's entrance appears to have dropped, Otago District Health Board member Richard Thomson says.

Mr Thomson, who chairs the board's hospital advisory committee, has been concerned visitors have to " run the gauntlet" of smokers at the hospital's front door.

"I think somebody's doing something.

"I'm not sure what it is."

The board has asked that urgency be given to finding a more suitable smoking place for patients who cannot be dissuaded from lighting up.

The board's smoking cessation programmes say that if a smoking room is established in the hospital, it would cost up to $75,000.

These costs were not included in the budget.

The report, from women's, children's and public health group manager Pip Stewart, also pointed out it would be difficult to find space in the hospital for a smokers' room.

Under the Smokefree Environments Act, the room would not be able to be used for non-patients.

This would mean patients' visitors would still have to go outside to smoke, meaning the issue of smoking at entrances would not be entirely solved, she said.

The report noted that an area beside the main entrance of acute psychiatric ward 1A had temporary exemption from the board's smoke-free policy.

The smoking entrance issue is expected to be discussed again at the board's March meeting.
