Dunedin City Council three waters group manager Tom Dyer said the main was burst as the contractors were replacing a water valve at the intersection, and working with old pipes.
An alternative backup reduced pressure water supply was provided to the hospital, and the city council also quickly sent a water tanker to the hospital.
An estimated 20 to 30 nearby houses had been affected to some extent by the water supply disruption, but the nearby Leslie Groves Hospital had been unaffected.
It was planned to have full water supplies restored by about 11pm, Mr Dyer said.
