One person was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition following a malfunction with a gas cooker, Hato Hone St John says.
A St John spokeswoman said they were notified of the incident in Kelvin Rd in North East Valley about 9am yesterday and called Fire and Emergency New Zealand to assist.
A Fenz spokesman said when crews arrived they found a gas cooker malfunctioned, resulting in the gas igniting.
Fenz Dunedin City Senior Station Officer Martin Hastie said gas explosions could be prevented by making sure the gas bottle was correctly attached, cooking in a well-ventilated area, ensuring all equipment was up to compliance and keeping cigarettes and children away from the area.
Investigations into yesterday’s incident are ongoing.
