Hillary St resident Sarah Dalziel said she saw a "terrifying" lightning bolt strike a transformer across from her home on Tuesday night, near the intersection with Dover St.
Ms Dalziel said the power surged for several hours after the strike, causing her lights to pulse on and off. "It was awful. Like a horror movie."
Ms Dalziel said while the generator was a little noisy, she appreciated having electricity, especially with some Auckland residents still without power.
An Aurora Energy spokeswoman said Tuesday's wild weather caused power to go off to 115 households in Liberton, Pine Hill and parts of Northeast Valley.
Affected customers in Liberton and Pine Hill were being supplied by the emergency generator in the meantime.
Contractors were trying to get power restored by today, the spokeswoman said.
