A new weekend market in Outram is hoped to attract more people to stop off in the Taieri township on Sundays.
Local businesswoman Liz Wright started the market at the weekend, with 10 stalls run by local artisans.
Ms Wright said she loved Outram and wanted to make it more of a destination, not just a thoroughfare, as well as raising the town's profile. ''I think that's what Outram needs.''
A ''good Taieri girl'', it had been her dream for a long time to open a business on the Taieri. She started her business, Vintage Lizzy, selling gifts and homeware, in Holyhead St about a month ago.
The store is open on the weekends.
She was trying to think of more ways to encourage people to make a point of stopping in Outram, she said.
''It's all about promoting the town, as well as what's on in Outram.''
The market, held at the back of the Outram Hotel in the stables area, would be held monthly.
She was organising the markets on ''a shoestring'', but hoped there would be increasing interest in them, she said.
