A Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV became a flaming wreck on the Kilmog north of Dunedin yesterday.
Senior Firefighter Cam McLachlan said one appliance from Willowbank responded to the fire on State Highway 1 on the Kilmog, near Church Rd, about 10.25am.
The driver of the stricken vehicle pulled over to the side of the road. Its occupants were unharmed and able to call associates to give them a ride.
Firefighter Matt Hall, from Willowbank station, had to use breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.
Smoke had been noticed by the occupants of the car behind the SUV.
The cause of the fire was unknown but it was not being treated as suspicious, SF McLachlan said.
