Last week, a black and white 1940s photograph was found in a house in Kenmure, with the handwritten note "To Rene, with love Renee", by the house’s new owners.

There was speculation around the mysterious identities of both Rene and Renee by Otago Daily Times readers, and many sent emails with leads as to who they could be.

This week, the woman in the photograph was identified as Renee Harris (nee Lepine), by her son-in-law Ross McKay and her niece and former actress Louise Petherbridge.

Renee was born in 1925 and was 21 in the photograph.

She died in 2007.

Mr McKay said Renee was a Dunedin girl who lived in Tainui most of her life with her mum before she married Langdon Harris.

"After school, she went to work for the Harrises. They had an auction and real estate business in town here.

"She went to work in the office there as a sort of secretary and girl Friday, and Langdon Harris had offices above the auction house and that’s how they met and it was all on apparently."

Mr McKay said Renee was engaged to be married to another man while she was working there, but she broke it off soon after starting work at the auction house.

He said Renee was very strongwilled person and things had to be done properly for her.

"If Renee thought something was wrong and she didn’t like something, she’d say so — there was no pussyfooting around."

Mr McKay speculated that the other man was Rene, who is mentioned in the hand-written note on the photo.

"The possibility, I think, is that she’s given the photo to the person who she was going to be married to.

"She never went into details about the name or what the circumstances were, just that when she met Langdon she broke off the engagement to that person, whoever it was."
