James Doyle has wacky creatures covered.
The Dunedin artist and sculptor has been showing them off to the world after finishing his master of fine arts degree at the Otago Polytechnic's Dunedin School of Art.
Before starting his masters, Mr Doyle worked for Weta Digital, in Wellington, using his technical design and computer skills for movies such as Avatar, The Hobbit, Tin Tin and Planet of the Apes.
However, he wanted to ''take a step back'' from this work and focus on the more creative side of drawing and sculpting for his masters.
''I especially enjoy sketching. It can be rough ... doesn't need to be pristine.''
The process for his masters work has been to sketch, sculpt from clay, take photos of his sculptures and then digitally enhance them, he said.
His work features an array of strange creatures, including ogres, ''bird catchers'', ''snake-eagles'' and giant eels.
The next step for Mr Doyle may be to go back to Weta in the Weta Workshop, department instead of Weta Digital.
''I find conceptualising for films much more interesting than the technical post-production side of things.''
