A Helicopters Otago helicopter delivers a hopper of gravel to ground crew at the top of the Nicols Creek track below Swampy Summit yesterday as a 10-year project to build a "stunning" mountainbike track nears completion.

Mountain Bike Otago member Hamish Seaton said group members had been building a bike track that went up Nicols Creek — from Leith Valley up to Swampy Ridge — over the past 10 years.

The group had gravelled most of the track, but the top section was "just too hard to get to".

As a result, the group raised about $40,000 to get helicopters to do the top 1km section, Mr Seaton said.

"We got one day of it done last year, but then the gravel was too ‘sticky’.

"Helicopters Otago then generously built some new skips to get the gravel on to the track — it’s working really well," he said yesterday when they moved about 100 tonnes of gravel on to the track.

The track had been dug by hand through native bush and over quite challenging terrain, Mr Seaton said.

"Over the next week, we’ll smooth it out and then it will be all finished.

"It’s quite a stunning track."
