New architectural images of the new Dunedin hospital impatient building were released yesterday.

An application for resource consent for the hospital’s inpatient building had been lodged; internal design planning is set to continue for about 18 months.

The inpatient building would have 410 beds and a 53-bed emergency department, operating theatre suite, short stay surgical unit, intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit and a dedicated primary birthing unit.

Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand (HNZ) delivery of infrastructure and investment group director Monique Fouwler said they were working towards five Green Star sustainability rating through both the building's design and the use of latest technology.

The inpatient building was expected to open in 2029.

Over the next year, 1600 units of fabricated steel would create the main structural support system of the building, while the concrete flooring system would also be installed soon.
