Health Minister seeks fraud reassurance

Health Minister Tony Ryall is seeking more information about audits and internal procedures at the Otago District Health Board during the six years it was defrauded of $16.9 million.

Mr Ryall was not available for comment yesterday, but has earlier said it was clear there had been systems failures at the ODHB.

He was concerned how so much money - one of the biggest public service frauds, if not the biggest - went undetected for so long.

Following the multimillion-dollar fraud convictions of Michael Swann and Kerry Harford more than a week ago, Mr Ryall called for urgent confir-mation from the Ministry of Health that systems had been put in place at district health boards around the country to prevent fraud.

The ministry said advice on fraud had been provided to all district health boards, including sending a copy of a "generic fraud policy" to all boards and organising a fraud presentation to three Auckland boards, which was open to all other boards and board members via a video link.

Swann and Harford are in custody awaiting sentence next year after they were found guilty of defrauding the Otago board of almost $17 million by charging for computer-related services they never provided.
