Otago Regional Council might have "pulled back" from its multimillion-dollar waterfront building, but it still desperately needs a more suitable premises, Cr Michael Deaker says.
Cr Deaker's comments came as the council discussed a report on requirements for its headquarters, referring its recommendations to the new council, to be elected in October, to action.
"We've long realised we have to do something. These are unsatisfactory conditions for a 21st-century organisation."
The council still needed a new "efficient, effective and economic" home which allowed the maximum level of "technical usage", Cr Deaker said.
"We have 110 professional staff struggling away in a congested, low-tech environment."
Cr Gerry Eckhoff said the council got itself "into a bit of a bind" last time. It was important all options were revealed and the public consulted at an early stage. He did not want the preferred option to be the only one about which the public was consulted.
