Debbie Masina is making impressive progress on her bucket list.

The Dunedin woman was nearing her 50th birthday when she decided she wanted to try more of what life had to offer.

"I realised I didn’t really do stuff - I was a bit of a bum," she said.

She got to work on a bucket list and has since tried all sorts of new things, such as swimming with sharks and karting.

Ms Masina turned 50 last Wednesday.

For her birthday celebration on Saturday she decided to knock two things off that list.

The day started with a flash mob in Meridian Mall, where Ms Masina and about 40 friends she wrangled in showed off their moves on the food court floor.

She and her friends were not regular dancers, but she encouraged everyone to try it out.

"I told them as the music starts it will just take you over."

People who were not with the group joined in.

Even her parents, who were in their 70s, were dancing, she said.

Next was roller skating from Dunedin to Port Chalmers, which proved much harder than she thought.

The day was capped off with some "fried goodness and a few drinks" at the pub then a quick rest before a party at night.

She actively tried to be a strong role model to her friends and her children and making the most out of life encouraged them to try new things as well, Ms Masina said.

Last year her older sister died, as well as some of her friends.

The loss had made her aware of how precious each day was.

However, after all she had done she was confident when her time came her family would be proud she led an exciting and good life.

She hoped others would make the most out of life as well.

"Just get out there and have a go."

The bucket list was not completed yet and the next big event would be jumping out of a plane in February.
