Members of the Hall family yesterday thanked their friends, the public and the media for their support following Mrs Hall's death.
The 48-year-old mother-of-two died when her car crashed into a macrocarpa hedge beside Otokia Rd West, about 400m from the family's Woodside home, at about 8am on Wednesday.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Mosgiel, said Mrs Hall, a midwife, was on her way home after a night shift.
She was not returning from dropping her son, paralympic gold medallist Adam Hall, at Dunedin International Airport, as initially reported by police.
The last post on Mrs Hall's personal Facebook page, from Monday this week, talked about how tired she was.
In a statement on behalf of the Hall family, spokesman Kevin Davidson said the family was obviously shocked and saddened by its sudden loss.
"[They] are basically coping one hour at a time."
The accident had been a tragedy for the family and members were supporting each other through what was a difficult time.
"Adam's profile has raised this incident to national focus. We would, however, ask it be remembered that this is a family tragedy and not just a personal loss. Not only the Halls, but also their extended families are grieving Gayle's loss."
Police said the investigation into the cause of the crash continued.
Snr Sgt Brown said reports from the postmortem, vehicle inspection and serious crash investigation would be passed directly to the coroner, as was standard procedure after a fatal vehicle crash.
A funeral for Mrs Hall will be held on Tuesday. A venue has not been finalised, but a full funeral notice will be published in the Otago Daily Times on Saturday.
Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin said a mayoral reception for Adam, which was to have been held next week, had been postponed indefinitely.
