A Dunedin hairdresser says he feels "violated" after thieves broke into his salon and stole more than $10,000 worth of equipment.

Klone Hair, in Great King St, was burgled at the weekend.

Co-owner Karl Radel said he discovered the break-in when he turned up to work on Saturday morning.

Someone had smashed a window next to the salon’s back door, entered the premises and proceeded to steal "heaps of stuff", Mr Radel said.

Among the items taken were ghd-branded hair straighteners, the "Rolls-Royce of straightening irons", worth about $500 each, which had been displayed in the shop’s front window.

"They cleaned out the whole front window", Mr Radel said.

They had also taken shampoo, conditioners, clippers, neck trimmers and all six of his scissors, which had been sitting spread out and ready to go, on a table.

Each of the scissors cost between $800 and $1000 to replace, he said.

The thieves had also taken their most expensive range of shampoo products after gaining access to the stock room, which they emptied.

Mr Radel said the shop did not have an alarm and he had never had a break-in the 24 years he had been in business.

He called the break-in "bloody annoying".

"It makes it quite hard to work if your scissors are missing.

"You feel a wee bit violated ... In current times where everyone is struggling to make a coin, it’s something you don’t need."

Mr Radel said he was the only staff member whose scissors had been taken and the business was still able to operate.

While they had not been completely cleaned out in the burglary, he estimated they had lost between $10,000 and $20,000 in total.

A police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing following the burglary between 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday morning.

A scene examination had been conducted, he said.
