The Otago Cavy Club hosted the guinea pig show at the Halfway Bush School hall and more than 100 of the cute rodents were entered across the pure breed and pet categories.
Club secretary Andorra Sedgeman said she had recently moved to Lawrence from Auckland, and one of her goals on arrival was to get a local guinea pig club up and running.
The new club had members ranging from South Canterbury to Southland, and exhibitors had travelled from Queenstown and Timaru.
The club planned to host a show in Oamaru next month, and had designs on holding monthly shows around its territory from February to November.
Senior all-breed judge Andy Lawrie, of Auckland, said it was nice to see how good the level of competition was, after a large gap since the previous show.
Becoming an accredited guinea pig judge was a thorough process, involving five years’ experience as a breeder and exhibitor, followed by four years of training on conditioning and the pure breed classes.
