Group revives in bid to 'put Mosgiel on map'

The Mosgiel Business Association has regenerated itself in a bid to "put Mosgiel on the map" and get the community to shop locally.

After promoting the area for years, the association "came to a bit of a standstill" and allowed its status as an incorporated society to lapse, co-chairwoman Sarah Davie said.

But a new committee, established late last year, was breathing life back into the 50-business strong association.

"There is enthusiasm and positivity among members for making change and moving forward," she said.

It wanted to "build Mosgiel's reputation" as a destination for events and shopping.

"The big goal is to put Mosgiel on the map."

Part of that was becoming an incorporated society again. This would allow it to apply for funding and build relationships with other local groups and "drive the Mosgiel community".

One of its key ideas is to run a monthly farmers market between September and April.

The market, of about 20 stalls, would run on a Friday evening, allowing vendors to tie in with their trade at the Otago market in Dunedin on Saturday.

From there, Ms Davie hoped it was "just going to grow", with businesses encouraged to extend trading hours to cater for increased custom as residents became accustomed to shopping locally.

"People need to start thinking about going to Mosgiel, rather than going over the hill", for everything from building supplies to stationery, she said.

Another idea to push local custom was a business directory.

The association will distribute a Mosgiel and Taieri business guide before the Rugby World Cup, which would not only inform the community, but visitors as well.

Beautifying the main street and building partnerships with Taieri College were also on the cards.

"While we are the business association, we are inclusive in that we recognise how important the community is to us, and how important we are the community."
