A Dunedin resident was left flabbergasted after finding bags full of what appeared to be dirt dumped down a bank on Thursday evening.

Dunedin North local Jane Hand said she was searching for her escaped cockatiel in Prospect Park when she noticed a fresh dumping of what looked like green waste.

"I just can’t understand. It has to be someone that does landscaping because that looks like bags of soil.

"Why do they need to to this? It’s senseless."

Ms Hand theorised the dirt belonged to a tradie because of the type of waste dumped.

"If they can buy those sacks the dirt is in, then they can buy the council sacks and write it off their tax and take it to the dump.

"It’s past irresponsible. It’s stupidity."

The bags of waste were strewn all over the bank and down towards to the back of the reserve.

"This has been a fresh drop-off done last night. These tyre tracks weren’t here before yesterday."

Ms Hand called the council to let it know of the dumped dirt.
