Outram boy Lee Sutherland joined his grandfather Lyall Nash and dog Ruby to bag some of the first ducks of the season today.
Due to the clear weather many duck shooters complained the birds were elusive, but the pair got three ducks by midday.
Mr Nash said seven-year-old Lee was given a replica gun made of plywood, so he learned how to put the gun in the maimai and back in the vehicle before handling the real thing in a few years' time.
A number of father-son pairs and family groups were out shooting ducks in the Taieri and surrounding areas, with Tyrone Robinson, his family and friends, catching about 60 on Lake Waihola.
