Acting Sergeant Matthew Nichols, of Dunedin, said police were called to the Port Chalmers cemetery at 8.45am yesterday and a vehicle was found parked on graves.
"The vehicle had significant damage and one grave was damaged," he said.
The vehicle had been stolen from the carpark at Cumberland St Woolworths, after it was intended to be left there overnight, Sgt Nichols said.
It did not seem any particular graves had been targeted.
The vehicle was towed for forensic examination and investigations were ongoing to identify the person who stole it.
