Graduation ceremonies begin today

More than 1750 people will graduate from the University of Otago at a series of five graduation ceremonies at the Regent Theatre, Dunedin, this month, starting today.

About 1345 of those graduands will graduate in person, which is believed to be the largest number to graduate in person at any set of Otago ceremonies in May.

About 410 other graduands will graduate in absentia.

Suzie Muirhead, who has an Otago bachelor of physical education honours degree, and is a former captain of the New Zealand women's hockey team, will give the graduation address at the first ceremony, at 1pm today.

And 265 graduands in applied science, consumer and applied sciences, physical education and surveying will graduate.

Prof David Paterson, an Otago University graduate who is deputy head of the Oxford University division of medical sciences, will speak at the second ceremony, at 4pm today, and about 450 science and biomedical sciences graduands will graduate.

About 330 commerce graduands will graduate at the next ceremony, at 3pm next Saturday, and ACC chairman John Judge, an Otago commerce graduate, will give the address.

Prof Andrew Bradstock, director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, will speak at the next ceremony, on Saturday, May 19, at 1pm, and 255 humanities students will graduate.

Otago School of Medical Sciences dean Prof Helen Nicholson will speak at the last ceremony the same day at 4pm, and more than 440 people will graduate, including in law, dentistry and health sciences.
