Green Island Shed member Pip Weber, of Abbotsford, said the empty block of land was beside the Green Island Community Garden in Shand St, which was also on land owned by the church.
Eight men and two women from the area had joined the Green Island Shed group and more were invited to join.
''It's about getting people together and getting a sense of community back,'' Mrs Weber said.
The group would begin fundraising to get a shed built.
The plan was to build a shed using three shipping containers - one about 12m-long and two about 6m-long.
The containers would be placed to create a ''U-shape''
A canopy would be installed to enclose the space between the containers to create a work area.
The first fundraising project would be selling firewood, she said.
''There's a lot to do.''
Tools and other mechanical equipment, such as sewing machines, could be given or lent to store in the containers for the group to use, she said.
The objectives for building the shed were to provide a place:
- To be a safe environment for the community to meet.
- For people to be mentored to learn life skills such as sewing, gardening, woodwork, construction and tool handling.
- To develop community projects to enhance the Greater Green Island area.
- For the community to get more connected.
