A gymnast  who was reported to have suffered serious injuries at a Dunedin gymnastics facility was not as seriously hurt as first thought, the Dunedin Gymnastics Academy president says.

President Louise Taylor said an 11-year-old girl who was attending a school holiday programme at the academy sustained a sprained shoulder last Friday.

The incident did not fall within the criteria necessary to inform WorkSafe and the girl was not admitted to Dunedin Public Hospital, she said.

Yesterday St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the girl's injuries had originally been believed to be serious.

"The patient was assessed at the scene by the ambulance crew as having a serious injury and was transported thus.

"Thankfully, it obviously wasn't.''
