Two containers filled with donated goods are on their way to tsunami-stricken Samoa and the Dunedin community just keeps on giving.

Organiser Afamasaga Pavihi, from the Samoan Christian Congregational Church in South Dunedin, said it quickly became apparent that one container, the use of which was donated by CSL Ltd, was not going to be enough as items flowed into the Macandrew Rd church to be sent to Samoa to help people rebuild after the tsunami.

A second six-metre container was donated by the company and it, too, had been filled in just over a week since the appeal was made.

And still more goods are turning up at the church every day.

Items donated include clothes, crockery, toys, furniture, bedding, canned food and even a kitchen sink and a Christmas tree.

Port Otago Ltd has arranged to have the containers shipped free of charge to Samoa.

Commercial manager Peter Brown said the containers were picked up on Tuesday and began their rail journey to Auckland.

It was hoped they would be put on a ship on Saturday.

Mr Pavihi said the response to the call for goods had been overwhelming and the church was still accepting items.

"We've had all sorts of people, mainly people from the wider community, pensioners, even some little girls wanted to give their pocket money. But we don't take money, so they went away and bought something with it and brought that back."

The people of the community were very grateful for their kindness.
