Tahuna Normal Intermediate and seven other Dunedin schools have been given $100,000 worth of musical equipment by the University of Otago.
Tahuna received about $30,000 of gear, including five electric pianos, a full drum kit, guitars, a bass and recording equipment.
Music and ICT teacher Courtney Lousley said it was ''phenomenal'' to receive the ''really good quality'' equipment.
''It will mean that if we want to go down the pathway of having [more collaborative] group lessons, we'll be able to hook up five or six kids at the same time,'' Mr Lousley said.
''It's giving us a bigger toolkit.''
''It's just going to provide more opportunities for kids to learn.''
Year 7 pupil Victoria Hills (11) was thankful to the university for giving the school the equipment.
''I think it's cool because Mr Lousley can teach us how to use new instruments,'' she said.
Amelia Eady (11) said it was great to have the instruments because they would help the pupils learn music ''if we want to join an orchestra in the future''.
Other schools given equipment were North East Valley Normal School, George Street Normal School, Carisbrook School, Brockville School, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Otepoti, Bathgate Park School and Pine Hill School.
A University of Otago College of Education spokesman said the schools chosen were either ''normal'' schools, which had a close association to the college, or low-decile schools.
Each received between $5000 and $30,000 worth of equipment.
The instruments were part of the college's hire scheme but were ''no longer needed''.
''We wanted to ensure the instruments will continue to benefit the wider community,'' the spokesman said.
''We hope the schools will be able to supplement their existing music programmes and also introduce their pupils to new areas of music and performance that weren't possible before.''
