Designs for the makeover of Dunedin’s main shopping street are almost ready to be unveiled.

George St designs could be finalised in the next two weeks, Dunedin City Council chief executive Sandy Graham said at a meeting this week.

Mana whenua consultancy Aukaha has provided input into the concept.

The council wants to create a more people-friendly space in George St featuring new paving, street furniture, lighting and public art.

Aims include celebrating city heritage and improving safety and accessibility.

Councillors voted 9-5 in September last year for one-way traffic in George St, but some details of the upgrade had not been settled at that stage.

Documentation referred to activity zones, allowing space for planting, performance spaces and play equipment.

More detail was to be supplied in the next stage of design.

An update report will be presented at a special meeting of the council’s planning and environment committee, but no date was set for this when the committee’s agenda for the meeting on Tuesday this week was published.

The council did not respond to questions this week about the scope of detailed designs.

One matter that had not been settled in September related to work that could make the road stronger, in case it was later decided two-way traffic should be restored in George St.

Some work to replace underground pipes has been carried out already in nearby Hanover, London and Filleul Sts.

The first stage of construction work in George St is scheduled to start after Easter, on the block between Moray Pl and St Andrew St.

The overall upgrade in the retail area is due to be completed in 2024.

The election can't come soon enough so we can get rid of the mayor and his yes men.
