Businesses were evacuated and a section of Dunedin’s main street cordoned off because of a strong smell of gas yesterday morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two crews responded to reports of a strong smell of gas at the intersection of Cambria Pl and George St about 10am yesterday.

As a precaution, nearby tenants were evacuated.

Police and a gas technician from Genesis Energy also attended.

The gas smell was believed to be confined to one building, and Fenz crews ventilated it after an assessment by the technician.

Another callout because of the smell occurred about 2.30pm, he said.

Fenz crews stayed while the area was checked with gas detectors, which registered a "very slight" amount.

They left after about an hour.

No evacuations took place, the spokesman said

A resident and employee of a nearby business said Kind Company and Belle Bird Boutique appeared to have been evacuated.

The smell was "pretty bad".

She and her flatmates had been on edge all night after a gas smell sparked an emergency services callout on Tuesday morning.

A Genesis Energy spokesman said no leak had been detected.

The smell may have been related to the excavation work in Hanover St, where recent rain mixed with old gas residue in the soil gave off a "faint smell".

The gas network would continue to be monitored over the coming days, he said.
