Fundraising starting for new nets

A fundraising campaign to build new cricket training nets at Taieri College will be launched next week with a quiz night in Mosgiel.

Teacher in charge of cricket Andrew Sutton said the sport had experienced a resurgence at Taieri College in the past year and player numbers had grown from 15 to 50.

The increased participation had highlighted a need to improve the school's training facilities, he said.

There were already older nets at the school, which were fine for junior players, but ‘‘we want to up-skill these boys and girls and the nets we've got aren't capable of doing that''.

Mr Sutton said the plan was to build two artificial turf nets near the school's indoor training centre. It was estimated they could cost up to $18,000 and he hoped they would be in use by next season.

A committee had been formed to co-ordinate fundraising.

■The quiz night will be held at Hotel Taieri, Mosgiel on Wednesday, April 20 starting at 7pm. Entry for teams of three to six was $20. Tickets could be purchased by contacting Mr Sutton on 027-475-2742.
