Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin will head a subcommittee being established to respond quickly to a Government fund for new infrastructure projects.
The formation of the subcommittee, which also includes deputy mayor Syd Brown and five councillors, was suggested during the fourth day of the Dunedin City Council's budget hearings yesterday.
The idea of the subcommittee was raised by Cr Paul Hudson, who said the city needed to respond quickly if, and when, details of the Government fund were confirmed.
Part of the subcommittee's role would be to hear ideas from the community on how best to stimulate the local economy, which could be funded either through Government support or directly by the council, councillors heard.
The exact criteria for deciding which ideas to support, either locally or through the Government fund, would be decided once any fund was confirmed.
