A former Labour MP and cabinet minister has been called on to help ensure a meeting about Dunedin City Council's response to last June's flood runs smoothly.
South Dunedin Action Group, which is made up of concerned residents, is meeting the mayor and council staff today to express its concerns about the council's response to the floods and a report that identified failings in South Dunedin's infrastructure during the flood.
Group member Ray MacLeod said it had asked former Labour government minister Stan Rodger, who represented the Dunedin North electorate from 1978 to 1990, to act as an independent chairman at the meeting.
‘‘It means we will have someone there to keep the meeting on subject and going in the right direction,'' Mr MacLeod said.
‘‘It's important that whoever is chairing the meeting doesn't take sides and I think he is very capable of not taking sides.''
Mr MacLeod said the group was not happy with the council's response to the flood and was seeking ‘‘practical engineering solutions'' to ensure the event was not repeated.
The group was concerned about the quality of infrastructure across the city and not just in South Dunedin.
