Mr Cashmore (39) and his young family moved to Dunedin from Tauranga in January after taking over meat processing business Fishers Original Foods, with two business partners, and he is enjoying getting the chance to see more of the city.
The former Auckland and Bay of Plenty fullback always enjoyed coming to Dunedin to play rugby, but never got a chance to explore the city.
''When you are down here playing footy, you fly in, you play the Saturday night, you have Saturday night, and it was at the Gardies back then, and then you leave the next morning,'' he said.
His wife Kylie and children, Ollie (8), Milla (6) and Zach (3) were also settling in well.
''It happened really quickly. We did the deal down here and I had to go back and tell my wife: `By the way, we might be moving to Dunedin','' he said.
He had been rushed off his feet since then, taking on a sales role, which meant much travel around the South Island and lower North Island meeting customers.
He expected those long hours to continue, but was used to giving it all from his rugby days.
''Sport for me was about being the best and pushing the boundaries. If you don't, then you won't succeed. I take this kind of attitude into business,'' he said.
Since making the move south he had been offered ''a number of coaching positions'' at different clubs, but did not have the time to contribute in any serious capacity.
''I am more than happy to ... help out when I can,'' he said.
However, he had been impressed by the strength of club rugby in Dunedin, with his son Ollie playing for Southern.
After hanging up his boots due to injury in 2006 while playing for Ospreys in Wales, Mr Cashmore spent two years selling commercial real estate with his father in the Bay of Plenty, but decided to move on after finding the job did not suit him.
He then looked to get involved in the supermarket industry, but when the purchase of a Four Square fell through he began looking for other opportunities. That is when he met his business partner Glenn Lange, who had 20 years' experience in the meat processing industry, and together with another business partner they jumped at the opportunity to buy Fishers.
