Fodder from the greater Taieri Plain area has been weighed for the results of a winter crop growing competition to be announced on Friday.

Competition committee member Ad Bekkers said about 60 dairy farms and about another 60 sheep and beef farms entered brassica crops in the competition.

Crops of kale, swedes, turnips and fodder beet had been weighed over three days last week, Mr Bekkers said.

The heaviest crop in each class would won a prize but the ''bragging rights'' were the bigger prize, Mr Bekkers said.

The Taieri Lions and Taieri Rotary Clubs organised the competition and the inaugural event last year raised $60,000.

The prizegiving at Wingatui Racecourse on Friday would raise money for the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust and Taieri community projects,''It's all done for a good cause and its a good get-together.''
