A driver who swerved along a Dunedin street to dump derelict furniture from his trailer is now the subject of a police investigation.

CCTV cameras in central Dunedin captured the motorist driving erratically in Vogel St and careening around the corner from Gordon St to dump unsecured and decrepit furniture from his trailer at 2pm and 6pm last Sunday.

Otago Coastal road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking confirmed yesterday police were investigating the matter.

''We are obviously interested if anyone knows who was driving this vehicle can they make contact with police,'' he said.

''We need to investigate it fully but the driving is certainly careless if not dangerous.

''He's gone totally on the wrong side of the road. He's allowed stuff that's not secured to fall from the trailer and that's dangerous.

Police believed the vehicle involved was a Toyota Prado, not a Mitsubishi Pajero as earlier reported.

Dunedin City Council solid waste manager Catherine Irvine said council staff had spoken to the owner of the CCTV cameras that captured the dumping and watched the footage.

They had passed what they knew on to police in the hope of identifying the offender.

Another member of the public who saw the motorist had come forward to offer a description of events, Ms Irvine said.

''I have had another report now saying they circled the block disposing their rubbish,'' she said.
