The Fire Service was called to the blaze, which started in a meter box, at a two-storey house on Cavell St about 3.45am yesterday, Fire Southern Communications shift manager Brent Dunn said.
Four fire engines went to the scene after it was suggested someone was in the house, but it was later found to be empty, Mr Dunn said.
He said the fire was relatively small but, because of the size of the property, it took a long time to make sure the fire had been put out. It was not believed to be suspicious.
There was minor damage to the house.
The last fire engine left the house just before 9am.
