As voting season started, a steady stream of students made their way to voting booths set up at the University of Otago Link building yesterday.

Otago student Sarah Brookes, originally from Auckland, said it was good to have her say on her country’s future direction.

"I’m working at the polling booths, so I thought I would come in and get it done and avoid the rush.

"It only took a couple minutes, which was great."

Dunedin is regularly the country’s youngest electorate, with more 18 to 29-year-old voters than anywhere else.

It also sees a lot of first-time voters coming through, a group which Miss Brookes was a part of .

"I was old enough to vote last time, but I had just turned 18 and wasn’t informed properly.

"In hindsight, I should have voted, but at the time I didn’t care.

"Now I’m definitely out there telling everyone that they should get out and take those few minutes to vote.

"I ticked another job off the list today, that’s for sure."
