First inmate found dead at Milburn

The death of a prison inmate at the Otago Corrections Facility on Saturday morning has sparked a coronial inquiry.

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan, of Dunedin, said police and ambulance staff were called to Milburn about 7.15am when a 42-year-old man was found dead.

Snr Sgt McLellan said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances, and an inquest by the coroner would determine the cause of death.

The Otago Corrections Facility accommodates up to 335 male prisoners, ranging from low-security to high-to-medium security inmates and employs 200 staff.

It opened in 2007 and was the third of four prisons constructed as part of the Department of Corrections' Regional Prisons Development Project.

A spokesman for the Department of Corrections said the death was Milburn's first and an investigation would be carried out by the department alongside the coroner's, to determine what may have led to the incident.
