Helicopters were on standby this evening after two fires sparked by power lines broke out in Sawyers Bay.

Fire crews initially could not reach the 50sq m and 20sq m blazes due to fallen power lines in the Reservoir Rd area, near the golf course.

Emergency services were called about 7.15pm.

About 8.20pm a firefighter at the scene said the fires had been suppressed.

Crews from Ravensbourne and Port Chalmers attended, with backup from rural firefighters.
