Firefighters donned protective suits following a chemical spill at a Dunedin carrying company yesterday.
Hazardous substances liaison officer Brian Rietveld said a 200-litre container of a decalcifying chemical fell off the back of a truck, with a third spilling on to the floor of the Creswell St building shortly after 6am.
"No-one was hurt, and the cartage organisation did everything right, by stepping back from it and called 111 immediately."
The role of the Fire Service was to contain the spill to prevent any pollution of the immediate area, before trying to recover the chemical, he said.
Donning specialised equipment, the firefighters were able to recover the chemical, which had the potential to cause an environmental risk or explosion. It was disposed off in a safe location yesterday, he said.
The Department on Labour is investigating the incident.
