Fire near Waldronville contained

A large vegetation fire close to the Dunedin suburb of Waldronville has been contained with the help of two helicopters with monsoon buckets.
A Fire Service spokesman said it received multiple calls just before 6.20pm about the blaze, next to Otago Pistol Club's shooting ranges.

Principal rural fire officer for the Otago region, Dr Stephanie Rotarangi, said five appliances and two helicopters with monsoon buckets were involved in fighting the blaze.

The fire, which was believed to have started in some tyres, was contained by about 7.40pm, but an appliance would stay overnight in case it reignited.

Hundreds of people stopped their cars on Brighton Rd and watched the fire from across the Kaikorai Estuary.
