Firefighters look for the seat of a fire at the Coptic Orthodox Catholic Church of the Archangel Michael in Melville St, Dunedin, yesterday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the fire was being treated as suspicious.

A Fenz spokesman said units from Dunedin City and Willowbank responded to the incident at 9.25am yesterday.

An aerial appliance was also dispatched to the church.

When firefighters arrived, they located the small fire and extinguished the blaze.

The investigation is ongoing.
