The sporting prowess of members of the South Island Filipino community will be put to the test at a sports tournament in Dunedin this weekend.
About 700 people from throughout the South Island will compete in the annual South Island Filipino Sports Tournament.
Head of the Dunedin Filipino Sports Group Paul Salih said the Dunedin Filipino community had spent the past year preparing for the event.
"Sport is a big thing in the Philippines.
"Because we are so far from home, everybody is looking forward to getting together for the tournament.''
Men, women and children would represent their towns in basketball, volleyball, table tennis, billiards, chess, bowling, and indoor tennis.
The town with the most points overall would be awarded a shield, he said.
Mr Salih was particularly excited the Philippine ambassador to New Zealand Jesus Domingo would attend the event.
"That's huge. It will be really good and nice for him to join us in the tournament.''
The tournament was first run in 2008, and was previously held in Dunedin in 2011 when the Filipino community was "much smaller'', he said.
"The community is growing and so is the tournament.
"Every year, it gets better.''
