Few brave cold for Mayor's breakfast

A low turnout of pre-dawn diners for the annual Mayor's Midwinter Breakfast may mean the future of what has been a successful fundraiser is under threat.

Mayor Peter Chin and the councillors who turned up to serve food were left with little to do after few people arrived for the event.

Dunedin City Council events team leader Marilyn Anderson said the poor response from the public was "a terrible shame".

The event may have been affected by the weekend's test match at Carisbrook, leaving people worn out.

"A lot of the regulars we usually have lining up just weren't there," she said.

But while the event did not raise the amount it had in the past, when good crowds had braved the cold to support it, the foodbanks that stood to benefit would not miss out, Mrs Anderson said.

The food donated that was not used would be given to the foodbanks instead of cash.

Organisers would "definitely" have to consider the future of the breakfast, and sponsors would have to be consulted.

"We'll either revamp it, or maybe it's done its dash."
