Performing a hip-hop routine at the Peninsula Schools Gymnastics Festival at Bayfield High School in Dunedin yesterday are Tainui School pupils Zara Ward, Maraea Brooking, Natalie Copson, Cameron Burrows, Aleece Hoskings and Neve Clement
Tainui School principal and festival co-organiser Shelley Wilde said about 350 pupils from Andersons Bay School, Broad Bay School, Grants Braes School, Macandrew Bay School, Portobello School, St Brigid's School and Tainui School participated in the festival.
The year 5 and 6 pupils were put in teams to compete in "circuits'' including beam, mini-trampoline, a floor routine and ball and rope exercises.
"It's not a competition to see which school is the best; it's a festival celebrating the sport of gymnastics.''
The biennial festival was held to "ensure gymnastics stays alive and well in school''.
At the end, teams from schools could perform a rehearsed hip-hop or aerobics routine.
