Ferntree Lodge buyer interest much keener

Ferntree Lodge is attracting more interested buyers than when it last went on the market, agent Bev Walker says.

The former home of convicted fraudster Michael Swann is being considered for purchase by Australians, North Islanders and many from the South Island.

Ms Walker said interested parties have arranged for builders and roofers to assess the heritage mansion and quote repair work.

The property has some water damage, she says.

"Buying it is the easy part - it's assessing how much money must be spent after that," she said.

The fixed price of $585,000 is probably responsible for the increase in prospective buyers, Ms Walker says.

Last year the Wakari property was passed in at auction.

Ferntree Lodge was put on the market after the High Court ordered forfeiture of at least $2.5 million of seized goods belonging to Swann family trusts.

A South Islander entered into a sale agreement with the Crown in early August last year, but failed to settle last month.

The lodge, which has a council rateable value of $907,000, is said to be Dunedin's oldest surviving house and the only ferntree house still occupied in New Zealand.

It comprises an original 1849 pioneer cottage and mock-Tudor house built in 1902.

The home sits within 6630sq m of garden and has seven bedrooms, two bathrooms, four living rooms, a study, library, two dining rooms, a billiard room and four-car garaging
