Family violence seminar

A Community day which brought together southern police officers and other agencies tackling family violence, for the first time, will be repeated, its organiser says.

"Feedback from the community groups was that the day was very useful.

We will definitely be repeating it annually and trying to enhance the community involvement," Southern Police District family violence intervention co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.

The police have appointed nine family violence intervention officers in Otago and Southland in addition to Snr Sgt Lloyd.

Invercargill and Dunedin have full-time intervention officers.

The community day, held in Dunedin on Wednesday, involved 17 police officers and 17 representatives of agencies such as Winz, Child Youth and Family and Women's Refuge.

"The community day was very useful for networking, for sharing information and for putting faces to names.

''Many of those attending had not met each other before," Snr Sgt Lloyd said.
