Event all about community

You would think the woman urging people from across Dunedin to dress in red and dance to Wuthering Heights would be a Kate Bush super-fan.

But Dunedin City councillor Mandy Mayhem — the city’s "Wuthermother" — the annual gathering in the Octagon is more about the community coming together to have some fun.

Cr Mayhem said she was not a big fan of the English singer, but was a fan of how the community rallied behind the annual event thanks, in part, to her music.

The Dunedin event, being held at noon today, dates back to 2016, when a German woman celebrated Bush’s birthday by hosting a Wuthering Heights flash mob in Berlin.

The annual "Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" involves people coming out in their best red outfits and spending their lunchtime re-creating the iconic music video for Kate Bush’s 1978 hit song Wuthering Heights.

The "Wuthermothers", who help organise the worldwide event, try to hold the day as close to Bush’s birthday — July 30 — as possible.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for Wellness, Empathy and Kindness Aotearoa.

"Dunedin is a caring and inclusive place and we worry about people getting gloomy.

"Every $5 raised helps make a wellness toolbox and a pamphlet to keep people perky."

The event is open to everyone and Cr Mayhem asked that participants come dressed in their best red frocks.
